The philosophy behind your care

You are the center of this story. We educate, steady, and step back — so you can recognize your own authority as a mother.

Mother first, always

Your body, your identity, and your mental health are the center of every plan. The baby is deeply cared for because you are deeply cared for first.

Education over assumption

We do not take over. We teach, guide, and step back so you can recognize your own competence and lead your home with confidence.

A steady transition

From first contraction to the first months at home, you are supported through the inner and outer shift into motherhood — not rushed past it.

Confidence that stays

The goal is for you to trust yourself long after we leave. That confidence begins in labor and deepens in the quiet work of postpartum.

Your doula, Kristin

Founder of Ellen Held. Today you work with me; as we grow, every doula here is trained to this same standard.

Kristin Fannin

Founder · Matrescence Coach

Group Facilitator · Birth & Postpartum Professional · 13+ years

For more than thirteen years I have supported mothers through birth, postpartum, and the tender work of becoming. For the last five years I have also facilitated groups — spaces where you can slow down, listen inward, and remember who you already are. My work blends somatic practice, nervous system education, movement, creative expression, and honest conversation.

I believe the most powerful thing I can do is support you in trusting yourself. That means education over takeover, steadiness over rescue, and care that always returns you to your own knowing. My goal is not for you to need me forever; it is for you to feel genuinely capable in your own home, with your own baby, alongside your own community.

Ellen Held is growing into a curated agency of doulas — each one selected not only for skill, but for the rare ability to see you clearly without taking over. Every birth and postpartum professional is personally mentored to this standard before they ever step into your room.

Questions, answered

A few of the things you may ask before we begin.

Ellen is a sacred name passed down through five generations of women in my family. It carries lineage, steadiness, and the kind of care that is inherited rather than performed. Ellen Held is a promise: that you will be held with the same gravity, tenderness and depth the name has held in my own bloodline.
We are a private practice of doulas, not a traditional agency. You are matched with one lead doula from the first conversation through the fourth week. But more importantly, our care is education-first and mother-centered: we prioritize your mental health, your confidence, and the structure of your home, so you feel capable long after we leave.
No. We are intentionally hands-off in the most supportive way. We teach, guide, and demonstrate so you can read your baby, trust your instincts, and build your own rhythm. Temporary overnight support is available when you need real rest — and even then, we are showing your support person how to take the next shift so the care returns to you. You are never left dependent on us.
We attend hospital, birth-center and home births, including water births. The right setting is the one where you feel safest; our role is to support you in feeling steady inside it.
Most mothers reach out early in the second trimester. Because only a few clients are taken each season, earlier is better. A brief note from you is enough to begin the conversation.
Absolutely. Your partner is folded into preparation, comfort practices and the early postpartum plan. The best support strengthens your whole family unit, including the people you already have around you.
Yes. Your doula serves as a calm bridge between your wishes and your clinical team, supporting you in asking the right questions and holding your preferences with clarity and respect.
Your mental health is woven into every visit, conversation and plan — not treated as an afterthought. We watch for signs of distress, create rhythms that reduce overwhelm, and connect you with trusted resources when needed. You are never asked to push through alone.
We map the people already in your life — family, friends, neighbors, care providers — and teach you how to use them well. Our goal is for your home to feel supported by your own village, not reliant on ours.

The investment

Elevated care is an investment in your confidence as a mother — and the structure of your home.

Our pricing reflects what it takes to give you one lead doula's full attention across months: education, emotional steadiness, mental health awareness, and the slow work of supporting you into your own authority. Below is why mothers who value depth choose this level of care.

Mother-centered, always

Your wellbeing is not secondary to the baby. We tend to you first because a steady, seen mother is what creates a steady home.

Education, not takeover

We teach, model, and guide so you can lead your own care. The confidence you build here belongs to you, not to us.

Postpartum mental health protected

Matrescence and emotional health are woven into every visit. We notice, resource, and create space before distress becomes a crisis.

Continuity, not coverage

Your lead doula answers your late-night call, sits beside you in labor, and returns to your home in the fragile first weeks. Your trust is never handed off.

Structure for your own home

We support you in designing rhythms, boundaries, and practical systems so your home feels manageable and truly yours.

A village you can use

We support you in identifying and activating your own community — partner, family, friends, neighbors — so support outlasts our contract.

Trained to one rare standard

Every doula at Ellen Held is chosen for emotional depth, clinical fluency, and the ability to hold space without performance — then mentored to our standard.
